How to Clean Tile Grout
By Youri Naimark of Denver Tile Installation
You probably know this already, but keeping grout clean and unstained is probably one of the most annoying things about tiled surfaces. There are tons of reasons to have tile, of course, durability, aesthetics, waterproofing, but problems with the grout can almost make you forget how much you love your tiled surface. If you are looking for a way to keep your (colored OR white) grout clean, look no further. Here is the easiest and most effective way to ensure that dirt can’t prevent you from fully enjoying your beautiful tiles. Try using powdered oxygen bleach, not only is it very eco-friendly, but it is extremely effective! It is nontoxic, produces no fumes and is safe on fabrics. Not only is it safe but it minimizes the work necessary to lift stains! With just a small amount of scrubbing, the oxygen ions will attack the molecules that make up any stain, breaking them apart so they can be rinsed away. Mix any oxygen bleach with warm water, stirring until the powder dissolves. Make sure that your floor is completely dry, including the grout. Then, pour the solution you just made on your tile surface, ensuring that every grout line is flooded with the solution. If your grout is damp from a previous cleaning, it won’t suck up the oxygen bleach solution as effectively. Now is the time for a break. Let the solution sit on the grout for at least 15 minutes, so keep all pets and children out of the room to minimize the mess. Remember, the solution is nontoxic, but you probably still don’t want the little ones playing in it and tracking it around the house. If the grout soaks all of the solution up, mix some more and flood the grout joints again. You want a lot of the solution sitting on the grout. The longer you let it sit, the less scrubbing you will have to do. The ions will keep working for up to six hours, but you don’t have to let them sit there that long to get results. No matter how long you plan on letting the solution sit, scrub the grout lightly after about 30 minutes, pouring new solution on as you scrub. When you are done letting the solution soak the grout, simply mop it away! This method is effective for removing dark stains like wine and beet juice, and is better than any tile-cleaning machine. To keep things looking new, add bleach powder to your mop water each time you clean your floor. Leave the mop water in the grout joints for a little longer than usual, but you shouldn’t have to scrub! The oxygen ions will clean the light dirt without your help. Rinse the floor with clean water after around 30 minutes, this will ensure that you never have to scrub the floor on your hands and knees again. This method works for all colors of grout, not just white. Now you know the secret to full enjoyment of your beautiful tiled surfaces, they’re so easy to care for, you’ll want to tile your whole house!
